7 Cheap Ways to Add Value to Your Home

By Lachelle Ferguson

Thinking of taking advantage of the hot market and selling real estate in the near future? Have you wondered how you can boost the asking price and appeal of your home?

Changing a few features of your property is a great way to add value to your home. However, this doesn’t always have to be a significant renovation.

If you’re looking to get more bang for your buck, here are seven cheap ways to add value to your home.

New carpets

Carpets are likely to be one of the most used and worn areas in your home. Whether it’s from pets scratching them up, kids spilling fluids and food, or general wear and tear from walking, this is a key feature of your home that needs updating every so often.

Start painting

Are the walls in some of your rooms looking a little tired or scratched? A fresh lick of paint or a reapplication can do wonders to make a home look newer. Pay attention to cabinets, cupboards and drawers where paint can easily be chipped off over time.

Backyard makeover

Roll up your sleeves and get straight into the dirty work of giving your backyard a makeover. While the only expenses that may crop up for this task may be rubbish removal and purchasing new plants, it’s likely to cost you more in elbow grease!

Tidy up lawns, get rid of weeds and ensure all rubbish is removed for a cleaner looking backyard.

Fresh drapes and curtains

Dust, moths and mould are all enemies for curtains and drapes. If yours are looking a little shabby then simply opt to make some yourself, or buy pre-made curtains from your local homeware store.

Newer chattels

If the chattels in your home are looking a bit outdated, consider installing newer ones to make your home appear more modern. They don’t have to be brand new – in fact, it can be cheaper to buy a modern second hand oven or dishwasher in good condition.

Lively light fittings

Light fittings are another part of the house that don’t always stand the tests of time. Moisture, rust, mould and dust can all affect these and damage them. Replace lamp shades, yellowing wall light switches or ceiling light fittings with new ones.

Extra storage

Storage is a sought after feature for many buyers. Fortunately, it’s also a relatively cheap addition to install for your home. Find areas in your property where there is a lack of storage. For instance, could your kitchen benefit from overhead storage cupboards? Perhaps some fixed shelves in the living room or a wardrobe in the bedroom?
