Property Management News- changes to strata laws for pets

By Lachelle Ferguson

Difficulties for pet owners in apartments and units could become a thing of the past with new strata rules planned by the NSW Government.

Current strata model bylaws, which are generally adopted in full by apartments and unit block strata committees, prohibit pets by default.

To allow pets, strata committees have to form their own suite of bylaws or vote to overturn the prohibition. The proposed new bylaws would reverse this, making the acceptance of pets the standard policy. This will be pleasing news to many renters who struggle to find pet friendly accommodation.

The new model bylaws are expected to be in place by the middle of next year.
