Narraweena is a suburb of northern Sydney, located 18 kilometres north-east of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of Warringah Council and is part of the Northern Beaches region. Narraweena is an Aboriginal name meaning a quiet place in the hills. The suburb developed after World War 2, when the land was subdivided.
Narraweena is built around a ridge with superb views over Long Reef and Dee Why beaches as well as views around Garigal Forest. It is a quiet leafy suburb only 2 minutes drive to the beach.
They often call the northern beaches God’s country and the suburb of Narraweena is at the heart of it, with convenient proximity to shops, schools and as many beaches as you can poke a stick at.
Narraweena is surrounded by Dee Why, Beacon Hill, Brookvale and Cromer, at the centre of what makes the northern beaches a wonderful place to live.
Narraweena is five minutes to Warringah Mall, one of the largest shopping centres in the southern hemisphere. If anyone on the northern beaches has to do any shopping then the mall is the place to go. There’s the Hoyts cinema complex, the massive JB Hi Fi store and if you’re feeling peckish, a litany of food choices in the food court.
For those who feel like more of a local touch, the shops on May Road just off Warringah Road at Narraweena have all the basics; a handful of take-away eateries, a bottle shop and a bakery. Along Alfred Street Narraweena are another set of fabulous local shops.
Narraweena is special because it’s ideally suited to take advantage of the bush that surrounds it and the close location of the ocean. The Beverley Job Park on Victor Road has tennis courts, cricket pitches and rugby fields all for the family to enjoy. Narraweena is on the fringes of other suburbs such as Oxford Falls and Allambie Heights, where you’ll find the Garrigal National Park and the Manly Warringah War Memorial Park. Both provide walking and riding tracks for all ages and levels of experience.
The beach is where people on the northern beaches like to spend their summer days and there are plenty of spots to soak up some sun. The closest is Dee Why, but there’s also Manly, Freshwater, Curl Curl, Collaroy, Narrabeen, Mona Vale, Warriewood, Newport, Avalon, and Palm Beach. And there are many more tiny pieces of beach heaven in between all those main locations.
Public transport is very easy in Narraweena, with buses running through the suburb and along the artery of the northern beaches, Pittwater Road. From Narraweena, there is access to the mall, Palm Beach, Chatswood and the city, all without having to take out the car.
There are a number of schools in the district and two within the suburb itself, with the Narraweena public school catering to those who choose a public education and St John’s Catholic School for those who wish for a private, religious education. Both cater for kindergarten to year six.
